Midsize Trucks: Five Ways the Chevy Colorado Tops the Toyota Tacoma

The midsize truck market might not be as aggressively competitive as the full-size segment, but it’s not far from it these days. A surprising number of midsize pickups are available, which can make it tough to find exactly what you want. If you’re interested in a Chevy Colorado for sale in Birmingham but you’re not quite sure it’s the right one for you, it can help to compare it to other popular models and see which comes out on top. Looking at the Colorado and the Toyota Tacoma, for example, we can see several significant reasons why Chevy’s midsize truck is your best choice.

A Superior Standard Engine

When you’re looking at any sort of truck, there’s no better place to start than with the engine. Although the engine is important in any kind of vehicle, it’s particularly vital when you want a truck that feels great on the road since you need plenty of power under the hood. Chevy has been making powerful, hard-working trucks for more than a century, so they understand the importance of an impressive powertrain better than just about anyone else. The standard engine on the 2026 Colorado is the perfect illustration of this, especially when compared to what Toyota offers for the Tacoma.

The standard powertrain for the 2026 Toyota Tacoma is a 2.4L turbocharged I-4 engine that provides 228 hp and 243 lb-ft of torque. That’s not bad for a midsize truck, but it doesn’t come close to what Chevy provides. The 2026 Colorado includes a standard 2.7L TurboMax engine that delivers 310 hp and an incredible 430 lb-ft of torque. This is also the standard engine found in the full-size Chevy Silverado 1500, which tells you what kind of work this monster can handle. The numbers speak for themselves, and while Toyota does have some available engines that help the Tacoma, its starting point is far behind Chevy. Even Toyota’s optional 2.4L i-FORCE turbocharged I-4, making up to 278 hp and 317 lb-ft of torque, doesn’t compare to the Colorado’s standard engine.

Better Towing Capabilities

Your engine directly affects the driving experience you have as you get around Birmingham each day. The last thing you ever want is a truck that feels sluggish or overloaded when you’re on the road. With a weak engine, even a midsize pickup can feel sluggish and underpowered, which is a real shame. Just as important for a lot of people, however, is the kind of work you can do with your pickup, which also tends to rely on the engine provided with it. While the Tacoma has some decent maximum towing capabilities, it can’t compete with Chevy.

A properly equipped Chevy Colorado can tow up to 7,700 lbs, which is fantastic for a midsize truck. Whether you need to haul a load of drywall behind your pickup or you like to take a camper out on the weekend, the Colorado is up to the task. Looking at the Toyota Tacoma with its standard engine, the best it can do is just 3,500 lbs, less than half of the Colorado’s capabilities. The optional engines for the Tacoma can help it tow up to a maximum of 6,500 lbs, which is still well behind what the standard engine in the Colorado can tow.

Greater Standard Payload Rating

Even a midsize pickup should be able to handle a lot of weight and help you tackle whatever you need to do. While not everyone takes full advantage of their truck’s towing capabilities, most folks we know frequently load stuff into their truck’s bed. That’s why payload rating is just as important as towing, and it’s worth spending some time considering and deciding on when you’re shopping for a pickup. The 2026 Colorado, with its impressive engine, can handle up to 1,684 lbs of weight loaded onto it as you drive around Birmingham. Someone with a Tacoma and its standard engine, however, has just 1,500 lbs of payload capacity, again far behind the Chevy. Whether you want to use your midsize pickup for doing your job or to help your kid move into their first place, the greater standard payload of the Colorado wins out.

More Impressive Off-Road Models

Both of these trucks offer a number of trim levels, making it easy to choose from a variety of setups that meet different needs. One of our favorite ways to use a midsize truck is heading off-road on the weekend, since its smaller size and bold performance are perfect for hitting the trail. While both of these trucks offer off-road trims, we find the Colorado makes it easier to get a trail-ready pickup without as much hassle. 

For one thing, you can get an off-road trim for the Colorado at an accessible price, which is ideal if you want to leave Birmingham roads behind and let loose on your days off. The Colorado Trail Boss trim is a great choice if you want an off-road pickup with impressive capabilities. It features a two-inch factory lift, off-road suspension, and an ultra-wide stance. Looking at the Toyota Tacoma, the TRD models are generally seen as good off-road options, but the confusingly-named TRD PreRunner isn’t actually a good pick for hitting the trail. Despite its all-terrain tires, the PreRunner isn’t available with four-wheel drive (4WD) and has a pretty underwhelming engine. The Colorado Trail Boss has standard 4WD and the powerful TurboMax engine. While the Tacoma offers some options, like the TRD Off-Road trim with decent off-road capabilities, the Colorado offers additional options, like the Z71 and ZR2, for more serious off-roading.

Better Standard Tech Features

In addition to a powerful engine and big capabilities, you probably want some other features that enhance your time driving around Birmingham each day. Both models offer numerous trims, but we find it helpful to focus on the base features when considering what you can get. Looking at the 2026 Toyota Tacoma SR (its standard model), we find fabric-trimmed seating, a polyurethane steering wheel, and an eight-inch infotainment display. A four-speaker sound system is standard in models with its small XtraCab. With the Chevy Colorado and its starting WT model, you get cloth seating, a steering wheel with controls for audio and other systems, and an 11-inch color Driver Information Center. The Colorado also comes with a standard 11.3-inch infotainment system with Google built-in, plus a six-speaker sound system. Higher trims offer features like available Evotex seating, wireless phone charging, and dual-zone automatic climate control, but every Colorado feels great on the road.
